From 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on March 20 and 21, 2010, The Church at Rancho Bernardo and members of the community labored side by side to pack more than 1 million meals for families in Tijuana, Haiti, Africa, and our own Greater San Deigo community.
More than 6,000 Rancho Bernardo citizens worked at various stations to bag a full meal including rice, vitamins, dried vegetables, and soy protein. Each one provides enough nutrients to feed a family of four for an entire day! After being bagged, the meals are boxed by a separate station of volunteers and then shipped by Kids Against Hunger.
The sponsoring organization, Friends and Family Community Connection, out of Rancho Bernardo, provided the infrastructure for the day and matched the church’s and community’s gifts of $125,000 to reach the total quarter of a million dollars needed to provide these million meals.
Not only will some of the most needy families be fed, they’ll also receive letters of love and support. Apart from Friends and Family Community Connection’s standard programming, a group of teenagers decided they would write notes directly on the boxes. While volunteers waited in line to be moved to where they could serve, this enthusiastic group decided to add to the event on their own, and others joined in. Many of the boxes to be shipped were scribbled with notes of encouragement, support, prayers and wishes of goodwill.
The Church at Rancho Bernardo is a San Diego CityFest with Luis Palau partnering church, and this event will be followed by continued acts of service throughout the county. Visit the CityFest website to learn more.
